Swarup was previously the Lead analyst - Financial Services for the EIU, the business intelligence unit of The Economist Group. He also designed and launched its sovereign sustainability index. Previously he has worked for the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, and The Economic Times, among other institutions. Swarup is also a trained Hindustani classical vocalist, having trained with sarangi maestro Mahesh Prasad Mishra and musicologist and author Kumar Prasad Mukherji.
